Demographic

Cumpston Sarjeant is involved in the analysis and projection of a wide range of demographic variables. Much of our demographic work overlaps with services mentioned elsewhere, including:

  • Emerging costs of aged care in Australia

Our work in the aged care sector has included developing a model for assessing the emerging costs of aged care in Australia. This has involved assessing both population projections and the increasing level of disability with age.
  • International visitor numbers to Australia

We have developed projections of international visitor numbers to Australia. We looked at six different types of short-term visitors to Australia - business, education, employment, holiday, visiting friends and relatives, and other. Projections were made for each type of visitor, for each of 27 countries, and the world. The projections allowed for GNP per capita, demographic and settler predictions for each country.
  • Population and household projections for Australia

We are making long-term projections of persons, dwellings and jobs for each statistical local area in Australia. The projections are based on statistical models fitted to data on immigrants, emigrants, employment patterns, migration between and within statistical divisions, land development and dwelling densities.
  • Membership of sporting clubs

We assisted a golf club which was experiencing an aging membership profile. This was important for two reasons. First older members tended to use the golf course more often. Second, for long-standing members over a certain age, the cost of membership was reduced. This meant that as the membership profile aged, there was greater demand for use of the course, and potentially less revenue from membership.
We analysed data on existing members, members who had left in recent years, and the waiting list. We then projected future membership to give the club a picture of possible future demand for club resources, and membership revenue.
